The community is invited to attend a public information centre on Saugeen Shores’ transportation planning.
The Town is updating its transportation master plan which plots out priorities for the next ten or twenty years.
The purpose of the update is to ensure the Town is ready to efficiently handle a growing community.
Statistics show the growth rate for Saugeen Shores from 2016 to 2021 was 16 per cent. By 2041, the projected population is 21,830.
A large part of that is due to Bruce Power’s major component replacement project to extend the nuclear power plant’s lifespan to 2064. There is also a possibility another unit could be built, which could result in further population growth. The beach communities of Southampton and Port Elgin are also attractive to retirees and cottagers.
The Town’s website says, “The goal of the update is to prioritize and encourage walking, cycling, and other sustainable travel modes as the first choice for short trips, including access to schools, local businesses, recreation facilities, and local and regional employment centres, while also accommodating increased vehicle traffic needed to support economic growth and community development patterns.”
There are two meetings which are intended to allow the community to learn about the plan and give feedback.
