The Saugeen Shores police department has issued a caution after a seagull was injured by a person.
Officers say they received a report that someone had broken a bird’s wing by hitting it with a beach chair at the Port Elgin main beach.
The police put out a public service announcement to remind the community that seagulls are one of many birds protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 in Canada.
This act makes it illegal to injure, kill, or disturb the birds, their nests and eggs.
The fine for injuring or killing a seagull is $460 and can result in criminal charges.
