You can tour a tall ship in Port Elgin Saturday.
The TS Playfair is in town. It’s a training ship run by Brigs Youth Sail Training, where they sail, eat and sleep on the tall ship.
They also get to explore ports and have campfires among other activities.
They just finished a “Great Lakes Hopper” course from Hamilton to Port Elgin, and are about to begin the “Mission to Manitoulin” course from July 13th to 26th where it ends in Owen Sound.
Tours of the ship, which is in the Port Elgin Harbour are available Saturday between 12 and 5 p.m.
Brigs Youth Sail Training is a charitable organization that teaches youth aged 13 to 18 leadership skills and how to sail a tall ship. Their website says, “Our purpose is the provision of an environment, aboard ship and in the Winter Program (classroom based) that fosters and rewards self-confidence, teamwork, responsibility, custodianship and leadership in youth.”
They say aside from the captain and first mate, the entire crew is 13 to 18 years old.
The Playfair was commissioned by Queen Elizabeth II and built in 1973 in Kingston.
