The success of the Hoops For Hope fundraiser has led to big donations being made to two health organizations.
The basketball fundraiser was started in memory of 17-year-old Olivia Rourke, one of the five victims from Walkerton District Community School who died in a tragic car accident in May.
The fundraiser raised donations for Brightshores Health System’s Owen Sound Cancer Centre, and the Canadian Cancer Society.
“We are deeply honoured by this incredibly generous gift made in memory of Olivia Rourke, whose life continues to make a lasting difference,” says Beth Morris, Brightshores VP Clinical Programs & Quality, Chief Nursing Executive. “This donation to support cancer care is a powerful tribute to her spirit, compassion, and the love her family and community continue to carry forward in her name. We are humbled by their strength and generosity during such a difficult time.”
Rourke had begun the groundwork to raise funds for breast cancer research after her mother was diagnosed in 2023.
The fundraiser was held on June 7th by staff at Rourke’s school, Walkerton District Community School and volunteers from the surrounding community.
More than 40 teams and 160 athletes took part.
Some of the funds raised were also used to establish the Olivia Rourke Foundation, which is a charitable initiative dedicated to continuing her legacy of compassion, leadership, and service.
According to a media release, the foundation will focus on supporting youth-led community initiatives, advancing women in sport, and funding cancer-related charities and research. You can find more information here.
