The Owen Sound North Stars Creative Playgrounds JEWL women’s lacrosse team continued their playoff Cinderella run with a second consecutive upset victory, defeating third-ranked Kawartha 12–10 in round-robin play.
After defeating the second seeded Kitchener Waterloo Kodiaks in their first playoff game, the #6 North Stars squad, led by Brooklyn Doyle with 7 points, defeated the third ranked team from Peterborough.
Kawartha opened the scoring quickly, striking twice in the first five minutes to seize early momentum. Owen Sound responded to level the game 3–3 by the end of the first quarter.
The teams traded goals in a tight second quarter, with Kawartha taking a narrow 6–5 lead into halftime. Owen Sound closed the gap in the third, outscoring Kawartha 3–2 to enter the final 15 minutes deadlocked at 8–8.
Strong defensive play throughout the game, and key saves from goalie Mykah Harris, allowed the North Stars to stay within striking distance before exploding in the fourth quarter. After Kawartha took a 9-8 lead with 10 minutes to play Owen Sound scored four unanswered goals, to take a commanding three goal lead. Kawartha would strike again with less than a minute to play but it wouldn’t be enough as the North Stars cruised to victory
Brooklyn Doyle scored five goals for Owen Sound and leads the playoffs with 10 assists, and 16 points, in two games. Laine Nissen scored four goals, while Camryn Laycock, Taryn Weppler, and Bree Wilkins each chipped in with singles.
Owen Sound’s final round robin match will be on Tuesday versus Oakville, but the win against Kawartha guaranteed Owen Sound top spot in their pool and a berth in the championship round of the provincial tournament, which will be held July 11–12 in Peterborough.
