Saugeen Shores Police say they are investigating a hate motivated crime in Port Elgin.
On Saturday, The pride rainbow crosswalk on Gustavus Street outside Saugeen District Senior School, was damaged.
Police say in a statement, “A Driver intentionally spun the tires of their vehicle causing damage to the crosswalk by leaving “burn-out” marks.”
They add, “Hate crime and hate motivated crime have a harmful impact on the community. It causes emotional trauma to the identified groups that are victimized by hate crime, and it results in serious friction between different groups in our society.”
Police say these crimes will not be tolerated.
They say in 2020, a similar crime occurred on this crosswalk. In that case, two people were identified, arrested and charged with mischief under $5000 and stunt driving.
