The United Way of Bruce Grey raised over $131,000 from its annual Coldest Night of the Year walks earlier this year.
In February, the organization held walks in Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Meaford and Grey Highlands.
Despite the five kilometre walk being cancelled as a result of extreme cold weather, participants were able to walk two kilometres in support of people facing homelessness, food insecurity, and poverty.
The funds raised from the walk will support the United Way’s various programs including, the Utility Assistance program, the Financial Literacy Program, 211 Information and Referral Services, the Outreach Fund, and the Backpack Program.
Additionally, the United Way partners with community organizations and splits the proceeds from the walks to support their operations.
The walk in Saugeen Shores raised over $60,000 with its partner, the Southampton Rotary Club. The money will go to expand local food and housing programs.

The Kincardine walk, in collaboration with the Good Food Box Neighbour to Neighbour Initiative, raised over $37,000 to buy 471 boxes of fresh produce for community members.

Over $19,000 was collected during the Meaford walk, which will go to support, with assistance from the Meaford Rotary Club, the House Outreach Room. It provides trauma-informed counselling for women, footcare for seniors, registered nursing, Victim Services Bruce Grey, and drop-in support for people facing barriers.

United Way Fundraising Champion Kristy Andre says, “This year’s Coldest Night of the Year showed us something powerful-compassion doesn’t freeze. When the cold snow forced us to pause the five kilometre walk, our communities still moved forward. These funds will help us support those who are unhoused, in crisis, and often forgotten. Thank you for walking with us, in every sense of the word.”
