A public meeting will be held this afternoon in Owen Sound council chambers, in relation to a new Catholic high school proposed near the city’s eastern boundary.
The public meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. and concerns a zoning bylaw amendment application from the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board for lands at 28th Avenue East — south of 16th Street East — where a replacement for St Mary’s Catholic High School is planned.
According to a public notice, the property needs to be rezoned from rural to institutional.
The new two-storey secondary school would be around 12,000 square metres of floor space, and able to accommodate more than 1,000 students. The school property would also include parking areas, sports fields, a field house and an auto shop.
The high school would be accessed from a new road off 28th Avenue East, which would be built about 240 metres south of the intersection of Highway 26/28th Avenue East.
City council will also review a technical report concerning the proposed east side high school during Monday’s meeting. A recommendation report is expected to come before council on July 21.
The Ontario government has committed more than $36-million to the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board for the construction of a new high school in Owen Sound, according to past Bayshore Broadcasting reports.
