Theresa Bester is Hanover’s Senior of the Year.
Bester was presented the award by Mayor Sue Paterson during a council meeting on June 16.
Paterson says Bester, who was nominated by a community member, has done much for the community.
“Theresa is the kind of volunteer every community hopes for. Wherever she lends her time and talents, she gives her all, going above and beyond with dedication, compassion, and a strong sense of community. She has been an active member of the Hanover Horticultural Society for 10 years, serving on the board of directors and assisting faithfully at the annual plant sale,” says Paterson.
She adds Bester has also given her time to deliver meals on wheals for over 10 years.
“Theresa has been involved with Light on Main for over 14 years, helping to feed over 100 people every week. As Assistant Captain in the dinning room, she plays a key role in creating a welcoming and wholesome space for all who attend.” says Paterson.
Additionally, Paterson says Bester has served in the Catholic Women’s League as President and has organized several funeral luncheons.
“She also packs shoe boxes for children in developing countries, fills boxes with clothing and essentials for those in need, and visits shut-ins in hospitals and long-term care homes, offering comfort where it is needed most,” says Paterson.
Bester has also spent time assisting local sports, including in local lawn bowling.
“She has served as President, sat on the board for seven years, chaired provincial tournaments, and acted as draw master for every Hanover tournament. She has even represented Ontario multiple times at the Canadian finals,” says Paterson.
The mayor says Bester’s selfless contributions, leadership and energy have made a lasting impact on the community.
Bester thanked council and recognized her husband for supporting her volunteerism, as well as wanted to thank all other volunteers who donate their time.
“I am extremely honoured to have been selected to receive the Senior of the Year award. There is so many other worthy people who dedicate their time and energy to volunteering in Hanover and I would be amiss not to acknowledge them,” says Bester. “I have always enjoyed volunteering, it gives me a great deal of satisfaction in my life. I have met so many wonderful people over the years and encouraged everyone to consider volunteering, even if it is just for a little while. My life is just a little bit better and brighter because of it.”
