A months-long road rehabilitation project is starting in Owen Sound.
While crews undertake the large construction project in the city’s southeast end, traffic will be disrupted on 9th Avenue East from Superior Street to 6th Street East until November.
On June 18, 6th Street East will be closed between 8th Avenue East and 9th Avenue East.
A few detours will be in effect to address congestion:
-Eastbound traffic on 6th Street East will be detoured northbound 7th Avenue East and eastbound 10th Street East.
-Westbound traffic on 8th Street East will continue westbound on 8th Street East to southbound 3rd Avenue East.
-Westbound traffic on 10th Street East will continue westbound on 10th Street East to southbound 3rd Avenue East.
The scope of the work includes replacing infrastructure, expanding sidewalks, and road resurfacing.
The city says the construction will significantly impact daily commuters, local residents, and tourists and to expect delays if driving along 9th Avenue East as the road will be reduced to one lane moving in each direction.
Director of Public Works and Engineering Lara Widdifield says, “This project will have a positive long-term impact for all users of this section of road, as well as local residents who will benefit from the replacement of aging watermain infrastructure.”
Two bus stop locations will also temporarily be relocated.
The bus stop near 611 9th Avenue East at the Superior Court of Justice is being relocated to 625 8th Avenue East, while the bus stop at 875 6th Street East at Lee Manor will be moved over to the 6th Street East service road at 795 6th Street East.
