A public meeting’s been called concerning a proposal to build a new Catholic high school in Owen Sound’s east end.
The city provided notice a public meeting will be held Monday, June 23 at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers, to allow people to provide feedback on a re-zoning application tied to the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board’s plan to construct a new 12,000-square metre secondary school.
The new high school would be located on the west side of 28th Avenue East.
“The purpose of the application is to permit the construction of a new secondary school. The new school is proposed to be comprised of two floors with approximately 12,077 square metres of floor space,” the advisory from the city explains. “The proposal also includes the construction of parking areas, stormwater management area, a field house, a small auto shop, sports fields and a portables area in case portables are warranted in the future due to increased student enrolment.”
Last year, a severance application brought to the city revealed the Bruce Grey Catholic Board selected a site near the city’s east boundary, near 16th Street East and 28th Avenue East, to build a new school to replace St. Mary’s High. The land needs to be rezoned to “institutional” to allow for the new school use.
The new Grades 9-12 school would be two-storeys, and able to accommodate more than 1,000 students.
The Ontario government has committed more than $36-million to the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board for the construction of a new high school in Owen Sound, according to past Bayshore Broadcasting reports.
