The annual Rotary Huron Shore Run is making its return to Saugeen Shores this weekend.
Leadership Team Member Geordie Farrell says the event this Saturday will begin at 7:30 a.m. with staggered starts for people taking part in the either five kilometre, 10 kilometre, and 21.1 kilometre fundraiser.
“It’s a big fundraiser in the community, and the community really has taken ownership of it. We have a huge bank of volunteers, 200 volunteers, and over 1,000 participants this year,” says Farrell. “This year we really stepped up the experience for the participants and I think it is showing in our registrations.”
Farrell says they have adjusted the route this year to eliminate a hill and take participants from High Street in Southampton and follow a scenic route south to Port Elgin before looping back to Southampton.
“This year, we have been working really closely with our town and they have agreed to shut down the roads along the entire course and that is going to make a big difference, both for participation and safety this year,” says Farrell.
The funds raised from the run will go to support the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation in purchasing an Automated Dispensing Unit.
“These advanced medication systems are meant to enhance patient safety and streamline care by enabling nurses to access medication quickly and accurately, especially in emergencies. These units are being placed in all the hospitals in the Brightshores Health System I believe,” says Farrell.
They add the funds raised will also be split between local clubs, including the Saugeen Track and Field Club, Saugeen Shores Lifesaving Club, Breakers Swim Team, and Chantry Seniors Centre, and the Rotary Clubs of Southampton, Port Elgin, and Saugeen Shores.
