Some roof work is going to be completed at the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre in Owen Sound this year.
Council will decide at its meeting Monday evening on a staff recommendation to award an $875,000 contract for the replacement of a 40,000 square-foot section of the roof, which essentially covers the YMCA area of the building.
The Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre is a multi-use facility with two ice pads and a YMCA-operated health, aquatics and fitness centre. It opened in 2012.
A city staff report says the roof system experienced multiple leaks shortly after construction, and there’s been damage to insulation as a result.
The repair project will address ongoing leaking issues, including the replacement of damaged insulation and the installation of a new membrane which is expected to last 20 years.
Council still needs to approve the recommendation to award the contract.
If it does get the green light, the work to the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre is expected to start sometime this summer and wrap up by October.
“City staff has been in communication with the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce throughout the design and tendering components of this project to review the proposed work and timing,” a report to council explains. “The City and YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce will communicate any impacts and closures to the public during the construction period.”
