The Assistant Coach of the Owen Sound Junior B North Stars has died.
The team announced Matt Eckert’s death on Saturday. He was 33 years old.
“Our organization is heart broken and crushed to lose an important member of our family. Matt connected with our players on a level that is indescribable. He is some of our coaches best friend. His infectious smile and caring heart are things that will never be forgotten. We love you so much Ecky. Thoughts and prayers to his family, teammates, our plays and anyone Ecky connected with. Rest in peace,” says the team in a post on Facebook.
While the identities have not been confirmed, this comes after four Walkerton District Community School students and a teacher died in a collision on Friday after returning from a sporting event in London.
Eckert was listed as a teacher at the school.
The Bluewater District School Board says its mental health staff and tragedy response team will be supporting students and staff.
A candlelight vigil is planned for outside the Walkerton District Community School this evening starting at 8:55 p.m.
Walkerton community member Tim Lowe posted on social media yesterday encouraging people to leave out running shoes on the front porch with a light on in honour of the victims.
Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody says in a social media post the municipality mourns the tragic loss of the four students and teacher from Walkerton District Community School.
“Our hearts are with the families and friends who are grieving this devastating event throughout the community,” says the statement. “In honour of the families affected the municipal flags will be lowered to half mast today and will be raised following services for loved ones.”
Ontario Premier Doug Ford says on social media, “I’m devastated to hear of last night’s tragic accident in Middlesex County, which has now claimed the lives of five people. My thoughts are with the families and loved ones grieving this terrible loss.“
