An investigation into an incident in Wingham by the province’s Special Investigations Unit has been closed.
On February 17th of this year, the Huron OPP detachment received a notification that the South Bruce OPP had closed the southbound lanes of London Road due to whiteout conditions.
While checking to ensure that closure signs were in place at the south end of London Road/Highway 4, an officer had pulled over with emergency equipment activated and started to help an immobilized vehicle in the ditch.
At that point, a snow plow had struck the cruiser, which then pushed the vehicle into two people who were nearby standing with their snowmobiles. The 46-year-old woman and 17-year-old girl were injured, and taken to hospital. The pair were diagnosed with several fractures and dislocations.
SIU Director Joseph Martino said he was satisfied and said that the investigation should be discontinued. He said in his report that it was evident that the officer at the scene was not conceivably responsible for the two snowmobilers’ injuries.
