The Walk for Alzheimer’s is coming up in Grey Bruce.
It’s set to be held in five locations on May 24th.
Community Development and Engagement Coordinator Michelle Fleming says, “We have one here in Owen Sound, we have Kincardine, we have Hanover, Saugeen Shores and Thornbury.”
She explains, “We do have a website where you can get registered, it is walkforalzheimers.ca or you can just come out the morning of the walk.”
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. there will be an opening ceremony and then the walk at 10a.m. there
Fleming says, “We have refreshments, we have prizes, it’s a great opportunity for people to come out and meet our staff, our volunteers and bring their families and walk together to support the Alzheimer Society and the families that we serve.”
The Alzheimer Society has a number of local programs. Fleming says, “We run a lot of social recreation, we have an education department, we have our support services. We are here to assist anybody that is on this journey.”
In Saugeen Shores, the event is at Fairy Lake in Southampton, in Owen Sound it’s at the Grey Sauble Conservation Area & Arboretum, in Thornbury it’s at Bayview Park, in Kincardine it’s at the Davidson Centre and in Hanover it’s at Sulphur Springs Conservation Area.
The Alzheimer society says 100 per cent of funds raised stay in your community. They note, $36 can provide an hour of respite care.
They say over 650,000 Canadians live with dementia. It’s expected that number will be closer to 1 million by 2030.
