You’ll soon see some deliberate signs of Canadian pride around South Bruce Peninsula.
Flag banners are planned for around Sauble Beach, Wiarton and Hepworth.
Mayor Jay Kirkland says the Sauble Beach Chamber of Commerce first floated the idea when US President Donald Trump started putting tariffs on Canadian goods going into the US. He says the Wiarton Legion also expressed a desire for a show of pride through town.
“It’s just showing patriotism and Canada pride for South Bruce Peninsula,” says Kirkland.
The Town will also be installing a standard hookup on each of the poles that normally have banners.
Kirkland says, “We thought, you know what? This is our opportunity to link everything together and come up with one standard pole.” Kirkland says that will make it easier for organizations like the legion or the chamber of commerce to order banners because there will be a standard style and size.
The Town is using $3,360 in accommodation tax revenue and $8,800 from the Council Community Grants budget to do the standardizing work. The Canada banners are pegged at around $6,000.
Kirkland hopes they’ll be up by Canada Day.
