Goderich council has passed a motion to denounce the instillation of Strong Mayors powers throughout Ontario.
The motion, put forth by CAO Janice Hallahan, would direct staff to sent a letter to Premier Doug Ford, MPP Lisa Thompson, and neighbouring MPPs for support.
On April 9th, the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced the expansion of Strong Mayor powers to 169 additional municipalities, which includes the Town of Goderich.
Concerns were raised by members of council that the move could create tension in governance because of the centralization of power, reduced accountability, and altering the balance of power that they felt would weaken the cohesiveness of council’s work.
