A co-operative business specializing in fuel and agricultural products is closing its retail store in Owen Sound.
Midwest Co-op announced in a news release it plans to close its store on 2nd Avenue East in Owen Sound in July.
The company statement mentions the location and its deteriorating structure as a couple of the reasons for the decision.
“The location has also reported several years of poor financial results. The building’s location and condition, combined with ongoing sales losses, has led us to close the store,” Midwest Co-op General Manager Kelly Boyle says in a release.
Boyle adds: “Making the decision to close a store impacts that location’s employees and community. We want to minimize the impact and disruption as much as we can while also acting in fiscally responsible ways to ensure the health and longevity of the Midwest Co-op.”
Four full-time and two-part time employees will be affected by the Owen Sound store closure. Two were offered new full-time positions, while the others were offered packages, the company release explains.
Midwest Co-op is based in Teeswater and was formed in 2022 through a merger of Huron Bay Co-operate and North Wellington Co-operative, according to the company’s website. It is an agricultural co-operative with 11 retail stores, as well as fuel cardlock stations, energy bulk plants and agronomy centres.
The Owen Sound store closure announcement follows the shutdown of Midwest Co-op’s Dundalk retail location in December. It has many other retail centres around the region, including Wiarton, Chesley, Markdale, Hanover, Durham and others.
The Owen Sound Midwest Co-op store will remain open until July.
