Earth Day is being recognized in Grey Bruce Tuesday, and some activities are also planned on the weekend.
In Saugeen Shores, there will be a community cleanup on April 22nd, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In Hanover on April 22nd, there are a number of activities and challenges planned including students taking part in school property cleanups, a tidy town challenge which will start at the P&H Centre and involve community cleanup from 6:30 to 8 p.m. with some refreshments fro volunteers. On Saturday in Hanover there’s a community-wide yard sale. It will have a map of locations on the town’s website.
Meanwhile Hanover has an Earth Day challenge for everyone on April 22nd, and it is to turn the water off when brushing your teeth, use a refillable water bottle, avoid single use plastics in your lunch, shop and wear second hand clothing, bring your own shopping bags and recycle.
In South Bruce Peninsula the Sauble Beach Community Garden will have an open house on Tuesday, April 22nd, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sauble Beach Community Centre.
In Georgian Bluffs, there’s a community-wide cleanup from the 22nd until May 13th. Those who register to say they are cleaning up can get free garbage bag tags. People are also being encouraged to share before and after pictures on social media with the hashtag #TrashtagGB. You can find more on Georgian Bluffs’ website.
In OwenSound, Joachim Ostertag from the Earth Day Grey Bruce planning committee says Saturday will be Earth Day Grey Bruce’s 4th annual celebration.
It’s set to open with a water ceremony led by Elder Shirley John at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 26th.
There will be live music in the street, face painting, dance and poetry performances at the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library followed by community conversations by Megan Myles, Climate Change Outreach and Engagement Coordinator for Grey County.
Ostertag says, “This forum is an interactive discussion on sustainability and climate change where community members can exchange ideas.”
There will also be upcycled art exhibits done by the students of East Ridge school in the Tom Thomson Art Gallery on 1st Avenue West.
There will be a green economy fair with presentations on green job opportunities in the St. Andrew’s Church gym.
It will conclude with a parade around the river led by the Durham Sauntering Band that begins at 2:30 p.m.
