The Sydenham Sportsmen’s Association is transporting 108,000 rainbow trout eggs after making its annual release into the Sydenham River earlier this month.
Vice-President Chris Geberdt says over 40 volunteers took part in the release of 60,000 rainbow trout at Harrison Park in Owen Sound on April 5.
“It just gives an extra boost to the population. Normally three per cent is survival rate in nature, but the way we do it, it probably raises it to 10 or 15 per cent,” says Geberdt.
Geberdt says he was on route on Monday transporting the rainbow trout eggs to the hatchery from Denny’s Dam in Southampton.
When the eggs are brought back to the hatchery, the association will undergo water treatment and fertilization to optimize the number of eggs that will hatch.
This comes after one of the association’s hatcheries collapsed in February as a result of the snow, and the fish were moved to one of the other hatcheries.
A GoFundMe was launched to raise funds to rebuild the hatchery. The fundraising campaign, which has since ended, ended up raising $7,845.
The association will be holding its 37th annual Salmon Spectacular this August.
