The Green Party Candidate for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound has several priorities this federal election.
Natasha Akiwenzie of Neyaashiinigmiing says she choose to run in this election to listen and elevate the riding’s voice.
“What I am hearing in the community is, I have head it for a number of years, is people like to be heard. They have a lot of information they would like to share and I think I can bring that skill of listening to people and raising up their voice,” says Akiwenzie.
Her priorities this election include affordable housing, the environment, and Truth and Reconciliation efforts.
“I have three grown sons living at home still and the cost of housing, or the lack of affordable housing is a really big concern,” says Akiwenzie.
Additionally, being the Manager of Bagida’waad Alliance, a not-for-profit corporation which conducts climate research on the waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, as well as encourages youth to hear the stories of the Elders about fish, and stewards the lands and waters, Akiwenzie puts the environment as one of her top priorities.
“I am very concerned about the environment, species and habitat and it is sometimes not talked about as much as it should be,” says Akiwenzie.
She says having an Indigenous background, originally from Lac Seul First Nation, Truth and Reconciliation is important to her.
“That is not being discussed as much as it used to be,” says Akiwenzie.
She is looking forward to getting out and talking to people in the riding.
