The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has cleared Bruce Power to begin its Unit Five Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project next year.
This is the latest in the energy company’s Life-Extension Program and MCR Projects, as it also continues to work on Units Three and Four, and wrap up Unit Six.
Bruce Power began work on Unit Four earlier this year.
“The privately funded projects generate $10 billion in annual economic activity, bolstering local and provincial economies while strengthening Canada’s energy independence,” says Bruce Power in a release.
As part of the work, Unit Five will be taken offline, which is the fourth the energy company has undergone as it renews Units Three to Eight over the next eight years.
Bruce Power says when all units return to service, they will provide clean and affordable electricity to the provide for decades to come, as well as generate cancer-fighting medical isotopes to people around the world.
President and CEO Eric Chassard says, “Through continued excellence and innovation, we’re helping to drive the economy and produce cancer-fighting medical isotopes. Our nuclear industry is truly a made-in-Ontario and Canadian success story.”
