Recently elected Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Paul Vickers has been named Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food & Agribusiness.
Vickers is a dairy farmer and former Meaford councillor who is starting his first term as an MPP, after winning the riding for the Progressive Conservatives in February’s Ontario election.
“I think it is a natural fit for myself, having my long history in agriculture as a primary producer and also as an Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) board member and Vice-President,” says Vickers.
Vickers’ responsibilities include assisting Minister Trevor Jones as well as attending functions on his behalf, with his colleague Progressive Conservative Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Bill Rosenberg, who was also named Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness.
“I think they will draw on our knowledge and our opinions on issues,” says Vickers. “It’s new to me, the announcement was made yesterday. I still haven’t met face-to-face with Trevor since the announcement and I will be interested to know what my responsibilities are.”
Vickers previously worked with with the minister while he was with the OFA.
“We worked well together and Trevor is a very positive person, and I think he will be a great person to work with,” says Vickers. “I am excited to be part of that role for the area, we come from such a large agriculture area here in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.”
MPPs will return to Queen’s Park next Monday, April 14 for the next session of the legislature, which will begin the Ford government’s Speech from the Throne.
