Some money is flowing from the provincial government for road construction in Port Elgin.
The Town of Saugeen Shores has received a grant of $1.9 million to build a road (Ridge Street) between the Bluewater Estate subdivision (Ivings Drive) and Bruce Road 25 in the south end of town.
The Town says it will provide access to future housing lots and will also serve as an alternate route parallel to Highway 21 for the Saugeen Shores community.
The money is coming through the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) stream of the Provincial Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP).
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says in a statement, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Province for providing this vital funding,” adding, “This support will help increase connectivity within our community, foster sustainable growth, and bolster opportunities for future housing supply. Together, we are building a more vibrant and connected community for everyone.”
The project is approved in the Town’s 10-year capital plan for 2025 and 2026 with the Provincial grant covering 50 per cent of the cost. Water and sanitary mains have already been installed on this Town-owned road allowance which is currently open for pedestrian use only.
