Hanover Council has passed a resolution to buy Canadian.
Council approved supporting federal, provincial and local initiatives to buy Canadian when and where possible during a meeting on Feb. 3 as the potential trade tussle between Canada and the United States is on hold for now.
Mayor Sue Paterson says, “this resolution prioritizes Canadian businesses to assist with strengthening our resiliency during this time of possible tariffs.”
As part of the approved resolution, council is also requesting the federal and provincial governments to work with municipalities on protecting Canadian consumers and businesses, as well as remove any obstacles for municipalities to prefer working with Canadian companies on projects.
The town says traditionally, trade agreements and legislation have prevented municipalities from giving preference to the purchase of Canadian products and services.
The town says according to data from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, municipalities in the province are expected to spend $250 to $290 billion on infrastructure in the next 10 years.
“I encourage all residents in Hanover and area to support our Team Canada businesses by choosing Canadian – made products and services. During this time, this is necessary for resiliency to maintain jobs, stabilize prices and strengthen our local economy,” says Paterson.
