Habitat for Humanity was able to celebrate a family being welcomed home this week.
Habitat Grey Bruce threw a celebration for a mother and son in Neyaashiinigmiing, which was the organization’s twentieth build on the First Nation’s territory since 2018.
The new homeowner, Shaelyne, says that getting the keys to her new home will allow her to raise her son, Abel, in their community by giving them housing security.
In a media release, Chief Greg Nadjiwon said that the construction of quality, affordable homes empowers families for generations to come.
The new home involved 200 volunteers, who contributed nearly 2,000 hours to construct the house.
Habitat executive director Greg Fryer said that the opportunity to build the home in Neyaashiinigmiing and working with members of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation is a meaningful project for both the organization and the community.
