The Georgian Triangle Humane Society is looking for support from the Municipality of Meaford for help in building a new animal shelter.
During Meaford’s council meeting on November 25, the GTHS said that they are out of space because of overwhelming demand.
Executive Director Karen Marsh shared that the shelter, which is located in Collingwood, is often used by residents in Thornbury and works in partnership with the municipality.
“We have exhausted our space limitations – daily, monthly, yearly – we are operating at or above capacity,” said Ellis. “This year, we’ve seen a 140% increase in dog surrenders, and at the worst of times we’ve had to turn families away who need our help.”
Not only is the animal shelter overcrowded with animals who require medical care, or are waiting to be adopted, but they have challenges with the building itself.
“We need a new roof, we need new floors, we need new kennels, we battle mould when it rains, and all of these issues battle our best bio-security measures,” she added.
Ellis says that because of so many pets living in such close quarters, there are also issues with disease that can spread from animals to humans.
“This means we have to isolate more animals without access to sunlight often, and for longer periods of time,” Ellis said. “That lengthens their stays and prevents us from bringing in more animals in need.”
The Georgian Triangle Humane Society is asking for $9,375 per year for ten years.
Council will consider the request as they work toward the 2025 budget.
