Bruce County received a report from their transportation services team outlining changes to winter road operations for the upcoming season.
Adam Stanley, the Director of Transportation and Environmental Services presented the report to council.
Transportation staff had undertaken an operations service review for its four highway patrol shops, and in the review found that the Walkerton sand dome structure cannot be used this season.
Following an analysis by a structural engineer, it was recommended that the structure not be used in its current condition.
The Walkerton sand dome was constructed in the mid-1970s.
Staff will be implementing short-term solutions for this winter, and have further ideas for the next 2-5 years.
For the 2024-2025 winter season, staff that typically work out of the Walkerton sand dome will be purchasing winter sand from the Brant patrol shop near Solway to complete the first patrol.
The remaining two patrols will be using sand from the Paisley Highways Patrol Shop.
For the coming years, staff have put forward a request to have a new sand dome structure built for an estimated $300,000.
