West Grey is going to consider a request to help fund a new outdoor pool project in Mount Forest.
The presentation from the Mount Forest Aquatics Committee comes after a Wellington North Recreation Master Plan in 2018 identified the need for a new outdoor pool.
The presentation from the committee says the Lion Roy Grant Pool in Mount Forest does not meet current accessibility standards and is in need of repairs and upgrades, which have a hefty price tag.
Community consultations were held in 2022, and a final conceptual drawing was approved by Wellington North council.
The new pool is set to be installed east of the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex on Princess Street, with parking to be shared with the sports complex.
The facility will include an accessible beach entry, lap swimming, a diving tank, and kids’ play area, as well as room for swimming lessons and aquafit.
“Aquatics is a great way for people of all ages to stay fit and healthy. Our aquatics programs bring the community together and provide opportunities for local youth. Participation in aquatics could lead to scholarships or other educational opportunities,” says the committee’s presentation.
The construction cost is estimated at $5.3 million, with Wellington North set to cover $2.8 million.
The committee is currently collecting donations and will be asking West Grey for any support.
Council will consider supporting the project during its meeting on Oct. 15 at 9 a.m.
