Huron County Council will be sending a letter to the OPP and to the province following the response to an instance of illegal dumping.
The incident under discussion was an instance of an unknown person going into the Mid-Huron Recycling Centre after hours and leaving hazardous waste instead of properly disposing of it.
This mean that the county had to pay for removal of the items, but the incident was also reported to the OPP.
At the time, the county was informed that because there was no municipal by-law in place, there was nothing that could be done, but the police did collect surveillance footage from neighbouring properties to help identify the suspect.
The county then also reached out to the Ontario Ministry of Environment, Conservation, and Parks, which has regulations in place for the disposal of hazardous waste.
In a report presented to council, it outlined that a by-law regarding littering and dumping would allow for fines to be levied against those who dispose of waste improperly. County staff, in consultation with staff from Central Huron, are working on implementing such a by-law in the future.
