- Downtown Video Surveillance Pilot Proposed In Owen Sound
Earlier this year, council approved a three-year pilot program which included installing 17 cameras downtown.
The purpose is to elevate the safety and security of residents and visitors in the River District, keep local businesses safe, and assist Owen Sound Police in investigations.
Phase One included eight cameras at the intersections of 8th, 9th, and 10th Streets East where they meet with 2nd and 3rd Avenues East, as well as 9th and 10th Streets West at 2nd Avenue West.
This covers landmarks such as City Hall, the area of the Roxy Theatre, and downtown shops, restaurants, and banks.
Cameras are installed on top of existing streetlights, with data storage and transmission infrastructure being cloud-based.
Phase Two will see the remaining nine cameras installed in 2025, and will include doubling up the existing cameras, and also branch out to 11th Street East and 8th Street West.
