A Quilt of Valour was presented to a local veteran over the weekend in recognition of his military service.
Owen Sound Gardens Retirement Residence Sales and Marketing Manager Kelsey Wellhauser says their residents gathered on Sunday afternoon as Corporal Tundra Lee presented the quilt to Vernon Baker for his service in the Korean War and post war efforts for veterans in the community.
“There is only a certain number of them in Canada of these quilts and they are presented to active service members or World War II veterans. Vernon, his time and his service, once he got out of the service, he was actually a member of Veterans Affairs for a little over 30 years,” says Wellhauser.
Lee presented the quilt on behalf of Quilts of Valour – Canada Society. Since forming as a registered national charity in 2009, the organization has presented quilts to thousands of Canadian Armed Forces members both past and present.
Wellhauser says Baker was chosen out of thousands of veterans to receieve the quilt.
Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MP Alex Ruff was also on hand to make the presentation to Baker.
“Alex Ruff and Vernon are actually part of the same Royal Canadian Regiment,” says Wellhauser.
