Kincardine councillor Doug Kennedy has died after decades of service to the community.
Kennedy filled many roles over the years, including municipal councillor, committee chair, coach, community organizer, neighbour and friend.
Kennedy served as a municipal councillor for nearly 6 years. While on council, he served as part of the Kincardine Community Fund, the Community Safety Committee, the Striking Committee, and the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee.
He served as the general manager of the Kincardine Bulldogs for 25 years, and took on the role of president of Kincardine Minor Hockey
He was also known for his love of sports and recreation, including support for Kraft Hockeyville, the Kincardine Bulldogs Beach dance and volleyball tournaments, and the Recreation Revitalization Committee. He was also involved with the annual Rock With Your Docs event.
In a statement from the municipality of Kincardine, Mayor Ken Craig says “Doug Kennedy was more than just a member of council, he was the heartbeat of sports, recreation, and health care in our community.”
Craig continued to say, “His passion for local sports was unmatched. His legacy of tournaments and health care fundraising events fostered a love of sports and a sense of community spirit that will endure for generations.”
Municipal flags will be lowered to half-mast in honour of Kennedy’s memory. The municipality is also hoping people will participate in a jersey day on Wednesday, August 28th, 2024, where everyone will wear a sports jersey in memory of Councillor Kennedy.
The Municipality of Kincardine has also added a memorial page with an online book of remembrance on its website for Kennedy, who is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Memorial cards are available in the main lobbies of the Davidson Centre and the Municipal Administration Centre.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
