The cost to repair the concrete pad at a skateboard and bicycle park in Owen Sound is going to be more than anticipated, after an unexpected discovery during construction.
City council unanimously approved a staff recommendation Monday morning to spend an additional $97,000 for the Kiwanis Sk8 and Bike Park revamp.
The total project budget is now over $172,000 — more than double the original number ($75,000).
Last year, council approved spending to rehabilitate a deteriorating portion of the concrete pad at the skate park near the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre.
Construction began earlier this month, but workers found a layer of insulation and another concrete pad beneath the surface that were unknown to city staff. All of that material needs to be dug up before the new concrete can be poured, and some trees also need to be removed. It’s that additional work that’s upped the cost of the project.
The Kiwanis Sk8 and Bike Park opened in 2014 and reused the concrete pad from the ice surface at the former Coliseum, which was demolished when the rec centre opened in 2012.
