Banks in Huron County are being warned of a scam involving fake documents.
OPP say they were called to a financial institution in Wingham Tuesday, for reports of possible fraudulent documents and suspicious person.
Reports say a lone man attempted to open a bank account using a passport from a foreign country along with immigration papers and other documents.
Police say the address provided to staff did not exist, and the bank confirmed the man was not employed at the local business he claimed.
Huron OPP officers viewed the suspect’s passport and confirmed it to be a fake with the Canadian Border Services Agency.
Police believe that the intention of the fraudsters is to open accounts with false identification, then gradually defraud banks of money over time.
