The city is purchasing some vacant land in Owen Sound’s northeast end for future affordable housing.
Council approved a recommendation at its meeting Monday to spend up to $225,000 to purchase three lots on 8th Avenue East from the Ministry of Infrastructure.
The lots are located on the east side of 8th Avenue, just down the road from Saint-Dominique Savio school.
“We always talk about what can the city do for affordable housing? This is one of the ways we can actually have a direct impact on what those uses are on those pieces of land,” says Coun. Travis Dodd, who moved the recommendation.
Owen Sound Director of Corporate Services Kate Allan told councillors the city already has confirmed intent from the Owen Sound Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corporation to pursue an affordable housing project.
A staff report explains the lands were forfeited to the Crown when the former corporation which owned them dissolved.
