Huron Hospices is looking for the county’s support for their expansion plans.
Executive Director Willy Van Klooster and Board Chair Lisa Taylor made a presentation to council during Wednesday’s county council meeting, seeking $50,000 in financial support to add four more rooms to the hospice.
The work is expected to be completed in August, and is being funded from approximately $1.8 million raised through community fundraising efforts and $1 million from the Province of Ontario.
The hospice serves an average of 48 people per year, with 72 clients through 2023. They also provided home services to an average of 105 people last year, and helped 100 people with grief services.
The addition that is slated for the hospice will give four new bedroom suites, five new walk-out patios, a children’s activity area, a reflection room, and laundry and storage areas for staff.
There will also be improvements including a fully accessible washroom for visitors, an expansion of the driveway in front of the building, and a new double parking space.
While Huron Hospice was asking council for $50,000 in financial support, the organization is $175,000 short of the total cost of the new addition.
