Hanover Police say they have seen an increase in the number of people arrested on outstanding warrants.
Police say this 50 per cent increase in the first five months of 2024 are warrants related to crimes in Hanover and elsewhere in the province.
A large part of this is a result of people not attending required court dates.
“This has become an almost daily occurrence for the Hanover officers who are hoping this alarming trend will not continue for the remainder of 2024,” says Hanover Police in a release.
Police say these incidents require significant police resources, including uniform and civilian personnel who are able to track, locate and attempt to safely arrest the suspects while completing the needed administrative paperwork each time these arrests happen.
Often times, police say these suspects will miss upwards of six court dates before they are finally help in the provincial jail system and not released until their trial date or the charges are resolved.
“The Hanover Police Service wants to remind those people who find themselves facing charges and have been given a court date that they are required to appear for every appearance either in person or virtually online as directed. Failure to do so will result in their eventual arrest and incarceration that will be at a time that never suits them or their families,” says police.
Police add those who have missed court dates to contact police in the jurisdiction who holds the warrant to arrange an appropriate time to visit the station and have the warrants resolved.
