Goderich council was able to discuss different concepts for the redesign of downtown.
Over the last month, presentations have been made to both the Rebuilding Downtown Infrastructure Task Force and the Goderich Council for an idea of how Goderich’s town square could look.
Input has been given by council, the task force, and from some business owners, and talked about potential planter boxes, dining space, retail space, and crosswalk designs.
Director of Operations Sean Thomas says that while there has been some discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of proposed designs, says that there should be some cohesiveness.
“My feeling is that there should be all eight intersections, one design that’s consistent both for pedestrians and for the motor vehicle users.”
Thomas says that input from municipal staff was to have some intersections wider to allow for large vehicles, such as garbage trucks, snow plows, and emergency vehicles.
“My feeling is that the wide-body vehicle [intersections] with two crosswalks to the centre, and the one crossing to the other side [of Courthouse Square] is probably the preferred option for staff and the consultant.”
Council has authorized staff to work with BM Ross and GSP to continue to the preliminary design phase for the downtown revitalization.
Once that design work has been complete, it will be presented to the task force and council again.
At that point, there will be more engagement and the budgeting process.
