A new musical comedy is coming to the Roxy stage in Owen Sound.
The musical Something Rotten! will premier this April and Director Kathleen Cassidy says the fairly new musical comes to Owen Sound after going on Broadway before the pandemic.
“It is a mash up of Shakespeare and modern day musicals and it is very funny,” says Cassidy.
She says the musical is about two brothers in the 1590s who are trying to compete with the famous William Shakespeare.
“They go to a soothsayer to find out what the next best thing in theatre will be and they write the world’s very first musical,” says Cassidy.
She adds the featured music is an homage to Broadways musicals.
“Lots of singing, lots of dancing, some tap dancing which we all love and just very hummable tunes,” says Cassidy.
She says she was drawn to this play after hearing one of the songs which referenced other musicals.
“I have been involved in doing musical theatre my entire life, so I just had to find out where this song came from. I got my hands on a script and watched some YouTube clips and decided that this was definitely up my alley,” says Cassidy.
Cassidy is no stranger to directing musicals at the Roxy after having brought Spamalot and Anything Goes to life.
The musical will run April 11-13, 18-20 and 24-27 at 7:30 p.m. and April 14 at 2 p.m.
