Hanover is starting a Food Cycler program.
The Town is purchasing 100 of the counter top composting devices and will offer subsidized units to those who want them.
The FoodCycler program has been picked up by a number of local communities, mostly in Bruce County over the past couple of years, with a number of pilot programs showing successful rates of waste diversion from landfills.
Residents will be able to sign up for them on a first-come first-served basis.
There will be two options: a 2.5 litre unit suitable for households of 1-2 people for $150 or a 5 litre unit for households of 3 or more people for $300.
Resident registration for the Food Cycler pilot program is scheduled to open on March 8th to the 22nd via a link on the Town website at hanover.ca/FoodCycler, or in person at the municipal office.
Town staff say the 100 units are scheduled to be available for pick up in early April.
The Food Cyclers require carbon filter changes every four to six months and the Town will order a supply of carbon filters for residents to purchase at the municipal office. They can also be purchased online.
Participants will be required to track their usage for a 12-week period as part of the pilot program.
The net cost for 100 units is estimated at $11,700.
