Goderich Council was able to hear about the Airport Strategic Plan this week.
The plan outlines a vision statement that says the Goderich Airport will become an aviation centre for Huron County, and will focus on meeting the social needs of the region.
The airport first opened on July 30, 1938 as the Huron County Sky Harbour Airport.
The new plan is aimed at creating opportunities for economic development.
The airport currently supports the operation of Ornge Air Ambulance, search and rescue operations by the Royal Canadian Air Force, and operations by the Canadian Coast Guard and Ontario Provincial Police.
The report presented to council also outlines a business development strategy, with seven opportunities that would be worth pursuing:
- Additional general aviation activity, including local and visiting aircraft
- Growth in the aerial tourism services of Papple Aviation
- Increased corporate and charter business-related movements;
- The rental of municipally-owned hangars
- The facilitation of aeronautical land development through long-term lease agreements
- Flight training, including the establishment of a Flight Training Unit at the Airport
- Aviation service businesses, such as aircraft maintenance.
