Meaford is awarding a $2.6 million tender for the Algonquin Drive and Lakeshore Road infrastructure replacement project.
Council approved awarding the tender to Seeley and Arnill Construction during a meeting on Feb. 26 after operations and engineering staff found the infrastructure along these roads needs replacement.
A report from Treasurer and Director of Financial Services Valerie Manning says, “the watermain on Lakeshore Road and Algonquin Drive has been prone to failure and has been identified as being undersized for current uses. There are also road and drainage deficiencies on these roadways that will be improved as part of the construction works.”
The scope of the work will include the replacement of the infrastructure from Algonquin Drive to Lakeshore Road South and from Ford Avenue to Centreville Road. There will also be road reconstruction, storm system improvements, watermain replacement, the installation of new fire hydrants, reestablishing roadside ditches, and the restoration of all the disturbed areas as a result of this work.
The municipality received eight bids for the project, with Seeley and Arnill Construction being the least expensive.
Director of Infrastructure Services Victoria Perejmybida says, “we were really excited to see we had eight tenders come in for this project. We typically get three contractors who bid on most of our large construction projects and so it is positive to see us having a more competitive bid process. This is definitely a larger project than we have done in recent years because construction has become more expensive. We haven’t been able to go as far with our budgets, but with some different planning and being able to do these larger projects, we are seeing the benefit and will hopefully continue to do so.”
The project falls under the set amount included in the 2024 budget by $1.2 million.
The roadways will be closed while the work is ongoing but residents and property owners will be granted access.
Construction is set to begin in May and will be completed by November.
