Simcoe County is pulling the plug on an organics and recycling facility that was first proposed more than a decade ago.
County Councillors have voted to cancel the project, proposed for a plot of land off Horseshoe Valley Road in Springwater Township.
Instead, they’ll negotiate contracts with private companies to handle the county’s green bin waste.
Officials say the move will save 200 million dollars over the next 23 years.
The county says a lot has changed in the waste industry in recent years, including a shift to have producers pay for recycling their packaging. There are also more private companies involved in processing organics.
