The Wiarton Propeller Club is changing its executive structure as it elects a new board.
New President of the Board Julianne Hull says the non-profit organization located at The Meeting Place, is bringing on a new board which includes herself, Cody Thompson, Jann Carder-Glaubitz, Gayle Hall, Kim West-Briggs, Douglas Briggs, Jackie Miller, Andy Mackey, Joanne Lancaster, and Stephen White following an election on Jan. 2.
“The club has taken a new approach on things because we are looking for new members and we had people coming to the club and the last executive felt it would be great to have a new direction as far as having directors and then people under the directors so we were more organized, we knew what was going on and we were accountable. Instead of just having small groups, we now have nine directors for various areas at the club,” says Hull.
The new directors’ responsibilities range from budget and grants, fundraising and marine heritage, and membership.
Hull says this change to the organization’s structure comes following a lack of membership.
“Our membership started to dwindle and then there was the threat of maybe not having enough members or interest and maybe losing our facility. So there was a big push on membership and awareness and people in the community value the Propeller Club as a place for youth, seniors, for all these different organizations that come and use our facility that we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose it,” says Hull.
The Propeller Club’s activities in the community include donating to various organizations and scholarships at the Peninsula Shores High School, as well as being involved with scouts and cubs, and providing their space to the Rotary Club and Kinsmen.
Moving forward, she adds the club wants to be there for the community to provide a space for people of all ages to enjoy recreational activities.
“We want to continue raising funds for organizations and for other purposes. We provide a place that people can come and visit and get together,” says Hull.
She adds to also mark their 75th anniversary, they are planning an event at The Meeting Place on April 20 which will include a supper, a speaker and dance. More information on this event will be available closer to the date.
