The province’s Special Investigations Unit has cleared an OPP officer of wrongdoing in a September crash in Saugeen First Nation that left a 42-year-old man with serious injuries.
According to the SIU, police attempted to pull over an ATV towing an oversized trailer on French Bay Road Sept. 3. The ATV driver failed to stop, then another OPP officer pulled his cruiser in front of the ATV to try to get him to stop. He didn’t. The SIU report says the ATV driver tried to move around the police car, but the trailer struck the cruiser and sent the ATV into a ditch.
A 42-year-old man sitting on the back of the trailer was thrown from it, and suffered serious injuries including broken ribs. He had to be airlifted to a London hospital for treatment.
The driver and another passenger on the ATV attempted to flee, but were arrested.
The SIU report says the OPP officer was within his rights to seek stopping the ATV.
