A charity group called the 100 Women Who Care Grey Bruce have donated $24,000 to Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce for a tiny homes project on Saugeen First Nation.
Group Chair Lynda Legge says it’s a student pilot project under the direction of teachers and Habitat fir Humanity at St. Mary’s High School in Owen Sound that offered a hands-on learning experience over the course of the 2022/2023 school year.
The roughly 250 square foot tiny home will serve as an emergency shelter for individuals and small families.
A release from the 100 Women Who Care says, “By engaging youth, Habitat Grey Bruce and the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board educated students about the need for affordable housing that has reached a crisis level and encouraged them to consider pursuing a career in a homebuilding trade.”
The group says it also allowed students and teachers to work on reconciliation with Saugeen First Nation.
Legge says, the school’s capacity to complete the project during the school year faced challenges that resulted in the tiny home being relocated to Saugeen First Nation unfinished.
The donation will allow the tiny home to be completed, covering the cost of a custom-built kitchen, apartment sized fridge and stove, plumbing, lighting, trim, flooring, interior doors, exterior deck and stairs.
Once completed, the home will be site serviced and operated by Saugeen First Nation as part of their overall housing strategy.
Legge says, since June 2020, the 100 Women Who Care Grey Bruce has grown from 41 members to 240 active members.
Many women are discovering the power of collective giving and making their 100 dollar donation make a huge community impact. This year alone we have donated $90,700 to four valued community organizations.
The group says this was their largest donation ever.
