Former Port Elgin mayor Brian Cleaver has died.
He was 76-years-old.
An obituary from Eagleson Funeral Home says Cleaver passed unexpectedly at the Southampton Hospital on Sunday.
Cleaver served as Port Elgin’s mayor from 1991-95, before amalgamation. He was also active in many community clubs over the years. In 2008, Cleaver was recognized with Saugeen Shores’ heritage conservation award for his work with the Southampton Art School Restoration Committee.
“I had the pleasure of knowing Brian for many years and always admired him for his charming, optimistic disposition and for his dedication to serving our community,” Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau says in a statement.
Saugeen Shores is lowering its municipal flags to half-mast until next Wednesday, Dec. 27 in honour of Cleaver.
