Things looked good for the Owen Sound Attack on Sunday, until they didn’t.
Malcom Spence scored a key shorthanded goal in the second period to turn the tide as the Erie Otters scored six unanswered, erasing a 5-2 deficit to beat the Attack 8-5 in Ontario Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
The Attack (13-11-2) and Otters (11-11-4) split the weekend back-to-back in Owen Sound.
Carey Terrance scored twice for Erie, while Martin Misiak, Kaleb Smith, Brett Bressette, Spencer Sova and Pano Fimis added goals.
James Petrovski notched a pair for the Attack, and Servac Petrovsky, Deni Goure and Cedrick Guindon also scored.
The Attack opened up a 5-2 lead just over three minutes into the second period, connecting on four power play goals late in the first and early in the second.
But Spence’s shorthanded marker at 3:54 of the second ended that stretch of power play success for Owen Sound, while cutting the lead to 5-3.
Misiak would add another goal less than a minute later to cut the Attack lead to 5-4, and the Erie found the game-tying goal past the midway mark of the third. The Attack had no answer — six straight goals from the Otters gave them an 8-5 win.
Ben Gaudreau made 30 saves in the win, while Carter George stopped 25 taking the loss. Corbin Votary stopped eight of 10 shots he faced in a brief start, getting lifted 11:42 into the game when Erie took an early 2-1 lead.
The Otters outshot the Attack 41-35 while going 1 for 5 on the power play; Owen Sound finished 4 for 5.
Next up for Owen Sound is a trip to Guelph on Friday.
